Memorial Day – Reading of the Names

Today in downtown Bend, near Drake Park, volunteers read the name, age and hometown of everyone [in the coalition] killed in Iran and Afghanistan. Who Knew it would take around 10 hours to read all the names?

Mt Bachelor Pond Skimming

On the last day that Mt Bachelor is open for skiing, there is a pond skimming contest.  Each participant has one goal – make it across the icy man made pond – while showing off their style and costume!

PPP = Pole, Pedal, Paddle [Race from Mount Bachelor to Bend]

Bend Kicks off the start of summer [and a final hurrah to ski season] with Pole Pedal Paddle.  PPP is an event that has around 2,800 participants…which can be teams, pairs or individuals.  There are six legs to get from Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort to the Old Mill District [Les Schwab Amphitheater]:
1 – Alpine [downhill] ski down a Mt. Bachelor blue run
2 – Nordic [cross country] ski 8 km
3 – Bike 22 miles
4 – Run 5 miles
5 – Paddle [canoe/kayak] upstream for 1/2 mile on the Deschutes River, then back downstream for 3/4 mile, then back upstream for 1/4 mile
6 – Sprint to finish line – “only” 200 yards

Today the weather was beautiful and we just fiddled around before going to watch PPP.  We messed up.  We got to the end/finish line, near the end of the event…when the stragglers were coming in.  So, I only have a few photos of the paddle part.  Next year, we’ll be smarter.
