Don’t Forget Bear Spray

I’m in the Wallowa Mountains, very northeast Oregon. Left my campsite to walk a mile to a trailhead. Almost there when I realize I forgot to ask the ranger about bears and if I should bring my bear spray…which is conveniently left in the van.

At the trailhead there is a sign stating a bear sighting in July. Right then, I hear Jingle Bells being sung. Great. I approach the 2 teenage girls coming out of the forest. There was a bear cub running all around, so that’s when they decided to make some noise. NO sign of Mama Bear.

Did I walk back and get my bear spray? Nah. I used the ole stand by’s…clapping and singing. But didnt have as much fun, due to the fear factor. Spray is now in my backpack.

BOOK: Trading Secrets. REMINDER: Friday September 13th

20 Hard and Fast Rules to Help You Beat the Stock Market
By Simon Thompson.

Friday the 13th – applies only to Germany, Ireland, Italy, Holland, Japan, Spain, Norway, Sweden and UK (Unsure why in just these countries and not others).

Historically, Fridays produce better returns than any other day of the week. Studies have shown that for the markets in the above countries, returns on Fridays on the 13th were significantly higher compared to other Fridays (in some cases, 10 times greater).

No one can come up with a good explanation, but the data samples have been substantial and cover a long period of time (going back to 1935).

The play? Buy an index fund shortly before the close of trading on Thursday and sell before close on Friday.

Even though this doesn’t seem to apply to the US markets, we have two in 2013: tomorrow and in December.

BOOK: Trading Secrets [Jewish Holidays]

20 Hard and Fast Rules to Help You Beat the Stock Market

I got this book from the library and kept putting it off to read.  However, once I did start, I’m very glad I did.  I HIGHLY recommend reading this if you are a trader of any sorts.

Buy on Rosh Hashanah. Buy first thing in the morning the day before Rosh Hashanah, then sell 2 days after. This has produced an average return of 1.1%.

Date of Rosh Hashanah:
Wednesday September 4, 2013

For this year, Rosh Hashanah falls on Wednesday September 4th. Thus he recommends buying first thing on the 3rd, and selling at the end of Friday the 6th.

Sell on Yom Kippur. Sell first thing in the morning of Yom Kippur and buy back in at the close of the following day. Markets usually fall 0.35% during these 2 days.
