Patterson Bridge, just north of Gold Beach, just one of many designed by Conde McCullough along hiway 101 in Oregon.
Highest bridge north of San Francisco. The steep hike down a trail was highly recomm…look one way and see the bridge, and look the other way to see great ocean view. NOT a pretty bridge.
We were given great directions to get to the dirt road to the big, 400 yo myrtle tree. Crossed the bridge, turned right, and proceeded to “Go up about 800′”.
Both Ralph and I thought it was 800′ in elevation. We drove about 4 miles along a bumpy, windy, dirt road that was 1.25 cars wide, which we shared with logging trucks. Kept discussing when we’d be 800′ higher. Then finally decided something wasn’t right and turned around.
On the way back, I was eagle eyeing anything that could be the tree, and we finally saw the path and sign, near where we first turned onto the dirt road…and realized the person giving directions meant travel just 800′ up the road! Ha.
Both of us thought we’d be on that road for a bit, so wasn’t even paying attention when we first got on it.
The tree and the short hike was impressive. 88′ tall, 42′ circumference at base.
We searched and searched for the 400 yo, big myrtle tree and this was the best we could find…so took photos in front of it.
Lots of real cool driftwood sculptures. If only we had a winch and a way to get them off the beach. We did bring home 2 smaller pieces for our xeriscaped yard.
Water was freezing, yet there were these 3 teenage girls playing in it. One had on a peach and blue bikini, but looked without suit from not too far away.
The Lighthouse is at the western most point of the lower 48.
Yeah, it sums up my food tastes when my fav Big City place to eat is Chipotle. Chips and guac, anyone? I’m fan enough that I write to them and just 2 months ago they wrote back to say “we don’t have plans to come to town at the moment”. I guess that moment has changed!
