Point Woronzof, Anchorage

This is the old timey ‘make-out point’ of Anchorage.

This is also right next to the airport…right before the landing strip. We’ve been told that when planes are landing you will first see their headlights way off in the distance and then they become closer and closer and will fly right above your head, only a few seconds from landing. They will look like they are going to crash into the bluff or go into the trees but they are not.

We went to check this out, but air traffic control diverted the planes to another runway, and they never even came near us. It was a bust.

Lake Eklutna, near Anchorage

Beautiful glacial blue water with mountains in the background. There is a trail to walk around almost all of the lake. You can also rent bikes and/or kayaks.

Oh, we saw a moose!

10.30 pm

Have to say, I’ve been to Alaska more than a few times, and have spent in total more than 3 months here during summer months.

And I’m still freaked out/amazed that it can be light as day at 10.30 at nite. That said, Anchorage is losing 5 minutes of daylight a day.

The Liveliest US Airport at 11 pm

Has got to be in Anchorage. We arrived at 11.05 pm and the place was crowded, as if it’s the middle of a busy day. All businesses were open. Of course, it’s still light out outside.

Our flight home is close to midnite, so in a couple weeks, we will be part of that crowd.

Long Sunset

On our flight from Portland to Anchorage, our plane is following the sunset. The sun has barely gone down below the horizon for the last 1.5 hours. It’s 10.20 pm and there’s still a pretty orange sunset.

It’s now 10.45 pm, and it’s lighter than when we stated at 8.45.

Alaska

Ralph and I leave later today for Alaska for 2 weeks. Flying in/out of Anchorage. Staying with Jen and Kristen for 3 days, then drive to Seward for 3, then ferry from Whittier to Valdez for a week. Sara will be coming to Valdez for a couple days. It’ll be a Gold Rush Days!

At the Portland Airport

We all have our airport pet peeves. Mine is…at the gate, people talking non stop, loudly on their phones. I had actually forgotten about this, because I fly so seldom, but the memory kicked right in when we sat down at our gate. Even though there are few people here, I listened to one woman’s angry bitch for too long, and now a Gma is talking baby talk to someone.

I will plug in my iPod.

July Weather in Alaska

Check out the weather in Anchorage, Seward and Valdez. We’re gonna have to bring cold weather and rain gear. Looks like it’s going to rain every day and the high will be either low 60s or high 50s. Brrr.

When’s It Going To Rain?

While camping, and hanging out at the fire, we heard some thunder and saw some dark clouds in the distance. Ralph immediately gets up and covers up our wood, puts everything into the car…preparing for rain.

I say “you’re doing that now?”

“When should I do it…as the drops are coming down?”

“But it’s not gonna rain for hours.”

Fast forward 20 minutes…and the rain is coming down. Good thing he prepared! Ha.
