Going to the fish hatchery was a really mind blowing experience, that I can’t convey in writing, nor in the photos.
I had read that this is a great place to try to see bears eating fish. We didn’t see any.
As we pulled up, I noticed the water churling over all the rocks. As I got closer, I realized that those aren’t rocks, but fish. Yes, thousands and thousands of salmon can be seen trying to swim up the ladder to get “home”.
There were also lots of seagulls eating all the dead fish. It was quite the scene.
We went several times and the scene was awful at low tide…with all the dead fish.
If someone had told me that there were 100,000 fish right here, I’d think… of course I have NO idea what 100,000 fish look like, but yeah, I’d believe that. Later, I found out the count is probably 50,000 – 60,000.
Seagulls eating the dead fish. This is where we saw a black bear.
Lots of fish all mangled together.
Low tide. LOTS of dead fish.
